Ultra Began on a Miami Beach Lawn

← Miami Music History

Before Ultra became associated with enormous stages and a skyline backdrop, it held its first music festival at Collins Park in Miami Beach. The year was 1999. Ultra describes the event as a beach gathering of about 10,000 people, with Josh Wink and Rabbit in the Moon among its performers.

The origin was local. Ultra says Russell Faibisch began producing electronic music events in Miami in 1997, leading to the inaugural festival two years later. Its first setting was Miami Beach, where the music was part of a South Florida scene already finding audiences for DJs and electronic acts. The festival’s later scale should not erase that beginning.

Ultra grew, and its setting changed with it. By its twentieth edition in 2018, the festival was at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami, with multiple stages and a program spanning DJs, producers and live acts. The waterfront park and surrounding buildings became part of its widely recognized image. Ultra’s own account contrasted that large event with the Collins Park gathering where it began.

The path between those places was not a straight line. Ultra has used multiple venues around Greater Miami. After its 2019 event on Virginia Key, organizers acknowledged complaints about the festival experience there and began looking for another location. That episode is part of the history, too: as the event grew, the question of where and how to hold it remained consequential.

The festival also carried the Miami origin outward. Ultra developed events internationally, turning the name of a South Florida electronic music gathering into a brand recognized well beyond the city. Its worldwide expansion did not make the first location incidental. Collins Park is where an organizer’s work in the local scene became a festival people could attend.

There is a useful way to measure the distance Ultra traveled: picture two audiences. One gathered at Collins Park in 1999. Another stood among the stages at Bayfront Park years later. Both were attending Ultra in the Miami area, but the festival and the city’s role in electronic music had grown around them. The story begins with the first crowd, before anyone could know how far the sound would carry.
