Dolphins Home-Field History: From the Orange Bowl to Hard Rock Stadium
If an older Dolphins fan tells you about the Orange Bowl, they are describing a different place from today's Hard Rock Stadium. If they say Joe Robbie Stadium, they are describing the earlier identity of the current venue. That distinction is the foundation of Miami's professional football stadium history.
The original home
The Dolphins began playing at Miami's Orange Bowl. The Pro Football Hall of Fame identifies it as their first playing home, before founder Joe Robbie realized his ambition for a privately funded stadium.
For a historical reader, the original stadium belongs with the games that happened there. A modern ticket buyer needs a different question answered: where does the next game take place? Keeping those questions separate prevents nostalgia from becoming misleading trip advice.
The move in 1987
Robbie unveiled the new stadium on August 16,1987. The Dolphins hosted Chicago in the first game played at Joe Robbie Stadium, according to the team's stadium chronology.
That was a venue move, not simply a change of sponsor. The new home later acquired a succession of names, but its opening marked the important break between the Orange Bowl era and the Miami Gardens era. Older accounts should retain Joe Robbie Stadium where that was the contemporary name.
The Hard Rock identity
On August 17,2016, the Dolphins and Hard Rock announced the agreement naming the renovated facility Hard Rock Stadium. The University of Miami's contemporary announcement provides primary confirmation.
Changing the name did not move the team to another site. It does, however, change the words you encounter when searching old games, photographs, concert announcements, or souvenirs. A historical archive should explain the relationship instead of assuming every reader already knows it.
What this means for your visit
Use the current event listing and stadium directions when planning a trip. An old ticket stub or an article about the Orange Bowl is a historical source, not a current navigation aid. Likewise, historical pictures are not reliable evidence of today's seats, sightlines, or available amenities.
