The Night Miami Silenced Allen Ginsberg at Marine Stadium

← Miami Music History

Miami Marine Stadium is often remembered for concerts on a floating stage and Jimmy Buffett’s leap into the water. Another performance there left a very different record: a federal court ruling.

On Dec. 22, 1969, poet Allen Ginsberg was reading at the stadium when city employees interrupted him. The event promoter had leased the municipal venue for the performance. According to the later court decision, stadium manager Manny Costa objected to what he believed was obscene poetry, particularly with young teenagers apparently present. Ginsberg could not finish.

The interruption took place in a setting Miami had made available to artists and audiences. Marine Stadium hosted rock, jazz, classical music and other performances during its years of operation. A poetry reading might seem unusual alongside those concerts, but Ginsberg’s appearance belongs to the same history of people gathering there to hear a performer’s voice.

Ginsberg and others went to court. The judge reviewed a recording of the reading, concluded that the city had violated the performers’ First Amendment rights and ordered Miami to make the stadium or a suitable alternative available without charge. The order specified an evening on Jan. 2 or 3, 1970, and identified the point where Ginsberg could resume: the beginning of “Krai Majales,” the poem being read when his microphone was disconnected.

That precision gives the case its force. The court did more than rule on an abstract principle. It addressed an unfinished performance and gave its audience a chance to hear the part the city had stopped. The order did not permit new ticket sales for the resumed event; its purpose was to restore the interrupted reading, not create another commercial show.

This is a story at the edge of Miami music history, where poetry and live performance meet. It also complicates the easy nostalgia attached to an unusual venue. Marine Stadium could offer artists a stage unlike any other in the city. On one December night, Miami officials cut that stage short.

The surviving court record preserves the moment down to the poem and the silenced microphone. Without it, the night might have disappeared behind the stadium’s more famous concerts.
