Miami Heat Arena History: Two Buildings, Several Names

Miami Heat arena history involves two different kinds of change: moving to a new building and renaming a building that remains in use. Mixing them together can make an old playoff account look as though it happened somewhere it did not.

The useful starting distinction is Miami Arena versus the later bayfront arena. AmericanAirlines Arena, FTX Arena, Miami-Dade Arena, and Kaseya Center belong to the latter building's naming history.

Miami Arena: the earlier chapter

NBA game records place the Heat at Miami Arena in 1988. That is the older venue, not an earlier corporate label for Kaseya Center.

This matters when following the team's early history. A photograph or game record mentioning Miami Arena should remain identified that way. Do not rewrite the location as Kaseya merely to make the archive sound current. Historical accuracy is more useful than inserting today's venue name into every sentence.

The bayfront move

The newer building opened under the AmericanAirlines Arena name in 1999. The Heat began playing there on January 2,2000.

The distinction between a building's opening and a team's first game is worth keeping. Both dates can appear in accurate histories because they describe different milestones. A venue guide should explain that difference instead of forcing them into a single date.

Later names, same building

The FTX naming arrangement took effect in June 2021. Following its collapse, the arena received the temporary Miami-Dade Arena name in January 2023. On April 4,2023, the Heat's official announcement confirmed that the home arena would immediately be known as Kaseya Center.

Those changes help explain why an artist's old concert listing, a playoff video, and a current event page can use different names for the same location. They do not indicate that the team moved to a succession of new arenas.

Reading the archive and planning a visit

Use the name appropriate to the date when reading a historical account. For a current visit, use Kaseya Center's event information and official directions. The arena lists its address as 601 Biscayne Boulevard in Miami.

A remembered section number or older seating photograph is a starting point for research, not a guarantee of today's view or benefits. Basketball and concert layouts also need their own event-specific checks.
